– President Ali’s Bold Inclusion of Women Reshapes the Political and Social Landscape of Guyana
In a powerful move that sends a clear message against outdated stereotypes that once confined women to the home or kitchen, credit must be given to His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali for boldly positioning women in leadership roles and reshaping the political and administrative landscape of the nation.
President Ali and his administration have not only proven their belief in the capabilities of women but have also actively entrusted them with some of the most critical portfolios in government and Parliament.
By placing women at the helm of key ministries, the Ali-led government has reinforced its commitment to gender equality and inclusivity, allowing women to break barriers, shatter glass ceilings, and lead with distinction at the highest levels of governance.
This progressive vision recognises and values the strength, capability, and transformative impact of women in positions of authority, setting a powerful example for the nation and beyond.
Demonstrating that women are equally capable of delivering meaningful and impactful results as their male counterparts, First Lady Arya Ali has emerged as a dynamic and influential figure in national development.
One of her most notable contributions is her unwavering commitment to ensuring that school-aged girls across Guyana have access to proper hygiene products, including sanitary pads, at no cost to them or their families.
This initiative directly supports health, dignity, and educational continuity.
Since assuming the role of First Lady in 2020 alongside her husband, President Irfaan Ali, Mrs. Ali has also championed the development and enhancement of safe recreational spaces for both children and their families.
These spaces, created across various regions of Guyana, foster community engagement, physical well-being, and social inclusion.
Additionally, Mrs. Ali has been instrumental in mobilising the private sector to support social welfare programmes.
Her advocacy has led to increased private-sector contributions to orphanages and initiatives benefiting vulnerable and less fortunate populations.
Inspired by her eldest son Zayd Ali’s love for animals, the First Lady has also taken a leading role in promoting animal welfare through his lemonade sales.
Through her efforts, millions of dollars have been raised over the years to improve shelters and ensure that animals across the country receive the care and attention they deserve.
By virtue of her initiatives and leadership, First Lady Arya Ali continues to exemplify compassion, action, and dedication to national progress, demonstrating the transformative power of inclusive and purposeful public service.
Meanwhile, the newly sworn-in Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, is assuming a significant leadership role in her own right.
Shortly after being sworn in at the State House on Saturday evening, the former Minister of Education commenced her duties the following morning by visiting communities and projects in urgent need of attention.
Renowned for her proactive and hands-on leadership during her tenure as Minister of Education from 2020 to 2025, Minister Manickchand has brought the same vigour and dedication to her new portfolio, underscoring her commitment to effecting prompt and meaningful improvements for citizens.
In less than a week, Minister Manickchand conducted a site visit to Bamia Primary School in Region 10, a long-delayed project critical to alleviating severe overcrowding and inadequate learning space for hundreds of children in the area.
Determined to expedite progress, the Minister mandated the immediate appointment of a dedicated project manager to oversee the completion of the school.
She unequivocally instructed the contractors that delivering the project by October is non-negotiable and must be treated as an urgent priority.
“The contractors have been told that it’s either they finish this or come off the project,” she stated firmly.
The Minister has also prioritised addressing the urgent challenges at the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill Facility.
For months, residents of Providence, Eccles, and neighbouring communities have raised serious concerns regarding persistent foul odours and the impact of the smoke on their quality of life.
In response, Minister Manickchand met with site officials and management to tackle both the immediate environmental issues and the long-term waste management demands facing the country.
She acknowledged that Guyana’s rapid development has significantly intensified the pressure on the landfill.
Where the facility once handled approximately 400 tonnes of waste daily, this volume has now surged to nearly 1,200 tonnes, with truck deliveries increasing from 100 to approximately 400 per day.
“Solid waste management is a huge area and a big concern for many residents across the country. And it has to be addressed in communities and regions across the country,” she explained.
The Minister assured residents that improvements will extend beyond Haags Bosch, with a nationwide focus on strengthening solid waste management.
Minister Manickchand also emphasised collaboration with local councils, communities, and partners to enhance cleanliness and safety in towns and villages.
She highlighted plans to work alongside the First Lady on community beautification and sanitation initiatives.
Furthermore, Minister Manickchand recently chaired her first high-level meeting at the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, bringing together regional leaders, senior officials, and representatives from all ten regions.
According to her, the meeting focused on establishing a new mandate centred on accountability, responsiveness, and efficiency, emphasising that local government must align with national priorities to ensure equitable development for all Guyanese.
The Minister has also engaged directly with neighbourhood councils, visiting the Eccles/Ramsburg Neighbourhood Democratic Council to discuss service improvements and reinforce standards of governance and community care.
She further met with the newly appointed Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Sarah Browne, in Liliendaal to strengthen inter-ministerial collaboration aimed at enhancing services and opportunities for Indigenous and hinterland communities.
While some may remain reserved or sceptical to see what these strong, dynamic, and independent women will bring to the table, it is only fitting that Guyana offers recognition and best wishes to the remarkable female leaders shaping the nation’s governance landscape.
A special commendation goes to:

As Guyana continues its journey of transformation, these women exemplify the true essence of inclusive governance and the unyielding strength of female leadership.
Additionally, the resilience, intelligence, and unwavering resolve displayed by Minister Manickchand and her fellow female ministers stand as a powerful testament to their dedication to addressing the nation’s most pressing issues with clarity, conviction, and care.
In doing so, their work reflects a government that not only listens but responds meaningfully to the needs of its people, while simultaneously laying the foundation for robust, sustainable systems that will serve the nation for generations to come.
As these leaders continue to advance with grace, competence, and determination, they deserve the highest commendation for their tireless service to the people of Guyana, often while balancing the demands of public office with personal and family responsibilities.
Ultimately, their unwavering dedication also speaks volumes about President Ali’s vision, a vision rooted in action, inclusivity, and transformation.
It affirms that this Cabinet remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering results over the next five years, propelling Guyana toward becoming one of the most modern, dynamic, and forward-looking nations in the region and beyond.
