OSDS Summer Camp: Empowering Youth with Hands-On Agriculture Skills and Inspiring Future Innovators

Secondary school students engage in agricultural training with NAREI representatives during OSDS's summer camp initiative

To ensure that their children are meaningfully engaged throughout the summer vacation, the members of Ogle Sanatan Dharma Sabha (OSDS) took the initiative to turn the break from school into an opportunity for both personal and agricultural development.

On the first day of their eagerly awaiting summer camp, the secondary school students participated in an interactive agricultural workshop guided by a committed team from the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) in a lively demonstration of interest and excitement.

Recognising that most of the students were fairly new to the science, the presenters, Mr. Dhanshyaam Ramsaywack, Ms. Jennifer, and Ms. Lalta, made it more approachable by converting technical processes into real-world learning experiences.

While explaining the process of modern agriculture to students, the presenters shared that budding, grafting, and air layering are three key methods used today to grow and reproduce plants.

They also explored the art and science behind plant propagation.

NAREI’s dedication to sustainable farming and thoughtful mentorship was well received by the students, who demonstrated enthusiasm in applying the techniques firsthand.

The initiative also served to educate young people about food security, foster a renewed connection with the natural environment, and encourage consideration of future pathways in scientific or Agri-technological fields.

Beyond a lesson in agriculture, the session at the OSDS represented a meaningful exercise in empowerment and environmental stewardship.

The primary school and younger pupils were also included, participating in craft-making, yoga, and various other activities.

To all parents, community members, and organisations: while the children are home, “we” need to recognise and get back to the days of understanding that everyone has a role to play in shaping a brighter future for Guyana.

Beyond academics, young people thrive when they are spiritually grounded, actively engaged in their communities, and connected to a sense of purpose through faith and meaningful involvement.

OSDS stands as a testament that now, more than ever, it is our collective responsibility as Guyanese to come together to ensure our youth remain educated, inspired, and empowered.

Together, “we” can nurture the next generation of leaders, rooted in values, driven by hope, and ready to lead with wisdom.
As human beings, the evolution of the mind is essential.

It requires strength, courage, and self-realisation to understand that “we” can either be part of the problem or part of the solution, one that strives for a better, more beautiful life for all.

A struggling, failing, or undisciplined youth is not solely an individual issue, nor just a parental one; it is a community issue.
“We” are all responsible for uplifting one another and nurturing each other’s children toward a brighter future.
