GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Construction of the new West Demerara Hospital is progressing steadily, with the modern healthcare facility expected to open in late 2027, bringing expanded diagnostic and specialist medical services to residents of Region Three and surrounding communities.
The development forms part of the Government of Guyana’s ongoing efforts to modernise the country’s healthcare infrastructure, improve access to specialised treatment and strengthen the delivery of medical services across the country.

During a recent visit to the construction site, Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, highlighted the visible progress, noting that the new hospital is being designed to provide faster, more efficient and advanced healthcare services.
Once completed, the facility is expected to significantly expand diagnostic capabilities, including access to Computed Tomography (CT) scans, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and cardiac catheterisation services.

These specialised services are expected to improve the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions while reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region for certain procedures.
The hospital will also provide a modern working environment for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, supporting improved patient care and service delivery.
While acknowledging that additional construction work remains, Dr Anthony indicated that progress continues towards the anticipated opening in late 2027.
“There is still work ahead, but we are moving forward steadily. We expect the new West Demerara Hospital to open in late 2027,” the Minister stated.
He further reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery across Guyana.
“Brick by brick, hospital by hospital, we are building a stronger healthcare system for every Guyanese,” Dr Anthony declared.
The new West Demerara Hospital is among the major healthcare infrastructure investments intended to strengthen Guyana’s public health system and expand access to modern medical facilities.
With construction advancing, the project represents an important step towards bringing specialised healthcare services closer to the people of Region Three and neighbouring communities.
