A major step forward in public infrastructure and quality of life is underway in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region as construction of the new Five Miles Water Treatment Plant continues to make steady progress.
The $458.1 million project, fully financed by the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government, promises to deliver clean, reliable water to hundreds of families in Bartica’s Five to Seven Miles corridor.
Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, conducted an impromptu inspection of the facility on Friday and expressed his satisfaction with the pace and the quality of the work.
The plant, once completed, is expected to alleviate long-standing water issues significantly that have affected residents for years, most notably the high iron content and inconsistent supply from the current system.
For too long, residents in these communities have endured challenges accessing safe, potable water, and this project reflects the government’s commitment to equitable development and improving public health standards across all regions, the Minister explained during his visit.

He also added that the new plant will tap a freshwater source and utilise modern filtration systems aimed at addressing mineral imbalances and ensuring safe drinking water.
According to the Minister, the facility is designed not only to meet current demands but also to support future population growth in the area.
Notably, residents and local leaders have welcomed the project, viewing it as a transformative development for the region. For many, access to clean water is more than a convenience; it’s a long-overdue step toward healthier living conditions and improved community well-being.
“This isn’t a large source, but it is sufficient for the area,” Minister Croal noted, highlighting the strategic and sustainable approach to securing water for these communities. The project underscores the government’s commitment to expanding access to treated water across Guyana, with ambitious targets of achieving 90% treated water coverage along the coastline by the end of 2025.
Upon its completion later this year, the Five Miles Water Treatment Plant will boast an impressive capacity of 3.1 million litres per day, a substantial upgrade that will directly benefit hundreds of families in the targeted zones.
Minister Croal also added that the facility will serve several new housing developments, which are also in the making.
