NELA Moves to Strengthen Leadership Across Guyana’s Public Schools

The National Education Leadership Academy (NELA), under the Ministry of Education, will host national orientation programmes virtually for newly appointed school leaders to strengthen leadership capacity and improve the management of Guyana’s public schools.

NELA, launched in December 2025, is dedicated to developing effective educational leaders by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and professional guidance needed to lead schools successfully and support improved teaching and learning outcomes.

The orientation will target newly appointed headteachers, deputy headteachers, senior masters and mistresses, and heads of department.

Participants will receive practical guidance on leadership roles and responsibilities, instructional supervision, record-keeping, conflict resolution, positive discipline, teamwork, staff welfare, safeguarding and inclusive education, among other key areas.

The programme will be delivered across three sessions: October 23, October 28 and November 6, 2026, with sessions scheduled according to participants’ leadership roles.

Through this initiative, NELA aims to support school leaders in transitioning effectively into their new responsibilities, strengthening accountability and fostering supportive school environments that promote quality education.
