In light of the case involving the late Jeffrey Epstein, the American financier accused of orchestrating a large-scale sex trafficking operation involving underage girls over many years, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand has issued a stern warning to parents and young people.

Speaking to the public on her social media platform, Minister Manickchand urged vigilance and discernment, cautioning families to be mindful of the individuals with whom they associate and, importantly, those to whom they entrust their children.

According to the minister, there must be a critical need for awareness, proactive parenting, and careful oversight in safeguarding young people from potential exploitation and harm.

Addressing the grave issue of children being exploited for sex, sex trafficking, and other sexual activities, Minister Manickchand expressed her outrage over the Epstein case and similar ones involving children.

She emphasised and urged both parents and young people to recognise that perpetrators often do not fit stereotypical images of villains.

According to Minister Manickchand, “If you think that the person who is going to lure your child, or if you think as a child that the person who is going to lure you, is going to be like an ogre looking like Shrek, smells stinky, and looks nasty and has two-week-old stale food stuck in his teeth, it’s not.

It’s probably going to be someone who looks really nice, smells really nice, and is really charming, probably someone who is your friend, or someone who you can relate to because they are your age, or it could be a girl or a woman.”

Minister Manickchand further emphasised that, as revealed in the Epstein case, many of the individuals who recruited girls and children for sexual exploitation were not monstrous figures or visibly threatening men.

Instead, she noted, recruiters often included women, men, and even girls within the same age group as their victims, using familiarity and trust to lure them into exploitation.

The minister also added that recruiters would stalk individuals, park nearby, and observe children who had not been picked up, particularly those who appeared lonely or vulnerable.

Furthermore, the minister implored parents not just to look out for strangers but to be mindful of individuals who are familiar and have close relationships with the family or whom the children can relate to.

According to Minister Manickchand, “Not everything that glitters is gold. Stay away from strangers, and stay away from anyone who is inviting you to do something that you feel is off, that you know is off, especially if they offer you a lot of money.

Please remind your children that [such individuals] could be uncles, stepfathers, neighbours, cousins, friends, or the children of your friends.

[It could be] people they know, people who look good, people they might trust and believe have a good enough life, and they may want to emulate that. Remember that.”

Based on court records, indictments, convictions, and publicly reported outcomes, Jeffrey Epstein was accused of running a long-term sex trafficking operation in which underage girls, some as young as 14, were recruited, groomed, and sexually abused at his properties in Florida, New York, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Prosecutors said he used paid recruiters to lure vulnerable teenagers with offers of money for “massages,” then encouraged them to bring other girls, creating a network of exploitation.

In 2008, Epstein reached a controversial plea deal in Florida, serving about 13 months in jail after pleading guilty to state prostitution-related charges involving a minor.

The agreement was widely criticised as overly lenient.

In 2019, he was arrested again on federal sex trafficking charges in New York. Before trial, he was found dead in his jail cell; authorities ruled the death a suicide.

His associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was later convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking and related charges for helping recruit and groom underage girls.

She was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison and is currently serving her sentence at Federal Correctional Institution, Tallahassee.

Current Position as of 2026: Jeffrey Epstein is deceased, and the criminal case against him was closed following his death.

Ghislaine Maxwell remains in federal prison while continuing to appeal her conviction.

Meanwhile, victims have secured financial settlements through civil lawsuits against Epstein’s estate and certain financial institutions, and public scrutiny over institutional accountability in the case remains ongoing.
