Minister of Housing Collin Croal inspects ongoing works at the 24-acre truck parking facility at Hermitage, Wales, West Bank Demerara, where construction is approximately 75% complete.

The 24-acre truck parking facility under development at Hermitage, Wales, West Bank Demerara, is approximately 75 per cent complete, with Minister of Housing Collin Croal announcing plans to establish a management committee to oversee its operations.

The announcement was made today Friday, October 9, during the Minister’s visit to the construction site, where he inspected ongoing works and engaged contractors.

The facility is expected to provide a designated location for truck operators and other commercial vehicle owners to park, service and maintain their vehicles, while helping to address concerns about heavy-duty vehicle parking and servicing in residential communities.

Outlining the proposed management arrangements, Minister Croal said, “Today, I announced that a management committee will be established to oversee the operations of designated truck parking facilities, with the proposed fee structure and operational arrangements to be announced in the coming days.

The announcement was made during a visit to the 24-acre truck parking facility under development at Hermitage, Wales, West Bank Demerara, where i inspected ongoing works and engaged contractors.

The management structure will ensure the facilities are properly maintained, secured and efficiently operated, while providing a designated space for truck operators and other commercial vehicle owners to park, service and undertake routine maintenance of their vehicles.

The operational framework will include security arrangements, maintenance provisions and a fee structure to support the long-term sustainability of the facilities.

The initiative is also expected to create employment opportunities for persons involved in their daily management and upkeep.

There are six contractors that are currently executing works across six lots, with overall progress approximately 75 per cent complete.

Four of the six lots are expected to be completed within the next month, while the remaining two are scheduled for completion before the end of 2026.

I expressed confidence that the facility will become operational before the end of the year.

Works have advanced to the placement of crusher run, while lighting installations are also planned to facilitate operations beyond regular working hours.

This development forms part of the Government’s wider initiative to establish designated truck parking and automotive service areas across the country, providing organised spaces for commercial activities while addressing concerns associated with truck parking and vehicle servicing in residential communities.

The facility at Grove, East Bank Demerara, which will be the first to become operational, similar arrangements will guide the management of the Hermitage facility.

These developments are intended to create a safer, more organised environment for commercial vehicle operators, while supporting the continued growth of the transportation and logistics sectors.

The Hermitage development is one of two such facilities being pursued in Region Three, as the Government continues to expand this initiative across the country.”

The Hermitage facility forms part of a broader programme to establish organised truck parking and automotive service areas across Guyana.

Similar management arrangements are expected to be introduced at the Grove facility on the East Bank of Demerara, which is slated to become operational first.

With construction progressing and the remaining works scheduled for completion before year-end, the Hermitage development is expected to provide additional infrastructure to accommodate the growing demands of Guyana’s transportation and logistics sectors.
