The restoration of City Hall is a powerful testament to how thoughtful investment, care, and love can revitalise not just a building, but the entire spirit of a country.
From faded past to a radiant present, this landmark now stands as a symbol of renewal and pride.
Solid Waste Management Director Mr. Walter Narine expressed deep gratitude to the Government of Guyana, especially President Ali, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the restoration of the iconic building.

Known as one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful architectural landmarks, the City Hall holds significant historical value for Guyana and its people.
Mr. Narine, in an exclusive interview with The El Dorado Beacon, explained that this project goes beyond mere construction.
According to him, it’s a gift to the national spirit of Guyana, a tribute to the country’s heritage, and a celebration for every patriotic Guyanese.
Noting that the restoration of this treasured structure marks a pivotal moment in preserving Guyana’s cultural legacy, the management director added that this project ensures future generations can continue to appreciate its historical and architectural significance.
“City Hall, a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture designed in 1887 by Reverend Ignatius Scoles, has long stood as a defining landmark of Georgetown.
Its spire, fretwork, and gracious proportions have witnessed our civic life for generations.
During the restoration, teams uncovered damage far more extensive than first anticipated, demanding additional work and an expanded budget.

Rather than retreat, President Ali and his administration leaned in, safeguarding authenticity and ensuring that future generations inherit the real thing, not a replica,” Mr. Narine passionately shared.
He further emphasised that all Guyanese should take pride in and fully support the government’s commendable initiative to preserve the nation’s history with integrity.
Furthermore, Mr. Walter explained that by investing in local craftsmanship and choosing cultural pride over convenience, this effort not only honours the past but also lays the foundation for a future where authenticity and heritage are celebrated.
The Solid Waste Management Director said, “It’s a bold step toward ensuring that Guyana’s rich history is respected and passed down with the respect that it deserves.
City Hall’s revival is a powerful signal that heritage matters, culture counts, and Georgetown’s best days can rise from careful restoration and bold leadership.
Thank you for honouring our past and elevating our future, President Ali.”
