MLGRD Apologises to Residents, Road Users Over Le Repentir Cemetery Fires, Warns Contractors of Dismissal and Blacklisting

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has issued a stern warning to contractors following reports of fires being lit at the Le Repentir Cemetery instead of the contracted weeding works being carried out.

In a statement, the Ministry apologised to residents and road users affected by the fires, describing the actions of the contractors involved as a breach of their contractual obligations.

The Ministry confirmed that the contractors responsible have been dealt with and that efforts are underway to extinguish the fire.

It further warned that any contractor found engaging in similar practices would face immediate dismissal, be held financially responsible for expenses incurred or damage caused, and be blacklisted from securing future contracts with the Ministry.

The Ministry stated, “We sincerely apologise to residents and road users for any inconvenience they may be suffering as a result of contractors who breached their contract and lit fires instead of weeding at the Le Repentir Cemetery.

Please be assured that those contractors were summarily addressed and the fire is being put out. Every other contractor who lights a fire will not only be summarily dismissed but will have to pay for any expense incurred or damage caused and will be blacklisted from getting work again with this Ministry.”

The Ministry’s position underscores its insistence on contractor accountability and adherence to contractual obligations as maintenance works continue at the cemetery.
