Health Ministry Strengthens Suicide Prevention Efforts with Two-Day Awareness Workshop

Dr Mark Constantine, Senior Clinical Psychologist and Head of Psychological Services at the Ministry of Health, facilitates a session during the two-day Suicide Awareness and Prevention Workshop at Herdmanston Lodge, alongside participants from several agencies and organisations.

In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, commemorated annually on September 10, the Ministry of Health’s Mental Health Unit is hosting a two-day Suicide Awareness and Prevention Workshop at the Herdmanston Lodge.

The workshop brings together participants from several agencies and organisations, including the Guyana Fire Service, Guyana Prison Service, and private-sector companies, with the aim of strengthening their knowledge and capacity to recognise warning signs, respond appropriately, and support persons who may be at risk of suicide.

The programme is being facilitated by Dr Mark Constantine, Senior Clinical Psychologist and Head of Psychological Services at the Ministry of Health, along with other members of the Ministry’s mental health team.

Through this initiative, the Ministry continues to promote greater awareness, early intervention and a supportive approach to mental health and suicide prevention, reinforcing the message that every conversation, connection and act of support can help save a life.

The workshop forms part of the Ministry’s wider efforts to strengthen suicide prevention through increased awareness, early identification of warning signs and timely intervention, while encouraging a more supportive approach to persons experiencing mental health challenges.
