From Wakenaam to UWI Valedictorian: The Remarkable Rise of 21-Year-Old Guyanese Scholar Naresh Jagnanan

A photographic retrospective highlighting the academic journey and achievements of 21-year-old Guyanese scholar Naresh Jagnanan, from his early education in Wakenaam to his selection as Valedictorian at the University of the West Indies.

Greatness is not determined by where a journey begins, but by the determination, discipline and ambition of the person willing to pursue it.

For 21-year-old Naresh Jagnanan, that journey began in the quiet community of Belle Plaine, Wakenaam, a small island in the Essequibo River, where his extraordinary academic abilities would eventually carry him beyond the shores of his homeland and onto the regional stage.

Today, the young Guyanese scholar stands as an example of academic excellence, having distinguished himself at every major stage of his educational journey, from primary school to the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he earned the prestigious distinction of Valedictorian.

His story is one of consistency, remarkable achievement and a determination to excel, regardless of geographical boundaries.

Where the Journey Began

Long before the university honours and regional recognition, Naresh was a student at Sans Souci Primary School on Wakenaam.

It was there that his academic promise became evident when he emerged as the island’s top performer at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), an accomplishment that marked the beginning of what would become an exceptional educational journey.

For a young boy growing up in Belle Plaine, the achievement represented an important milestone and laid the foundation for even greater success.

His transition to Essequibo Islands Secondary School would bring further recognition.

At the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, Naresh secured an impressive 11 Grade Ones, earning recognition as the Caribbean’s top Business student.

He was also named Valedictorian of Essequibo Islands Secondary School, another distinction that reflected his commitment to academic excellence.

Yet, his journey was only beginning.

Taking Academic Excellence to Another Level

As Naresh progressed to the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), his performance reached new heights.

He secured an extraordinary 14 Grade Ones and one Grade Two, achievements that earned him recognition as the top overall CAPE student in the Caribbean, as well as the region’s leading student in Business Studies.

In 2023, he was also recognised as Queen’s College’s top CAPE student.

His exceptional results earned him the prestigious Presidential Award Scholarship, opening another important chapter in his academic journey.

For the young scholar from Wakenaam, each achievement represented another step forward, demonstrating that a student’s place of origin need not define the limits of their potential.

From Guyana to the University of the West Indies

Naresh’s pursuit of higher education took him to the University of the West Indies, where he continued to build upon his already impressive academic record.

Over three years, he distinguished himself not only through outstanding examination results but also through his involvement in student leadership and service.

His academic consistency earned him a place on the Dean’s Honour Roll every semester, while his performance in several courses placed him among the university’s top students.

Beyond the classroom, Naresh served as Chairperson of the International Affairs Committee on the Guild of Students, demonstrating his willingness to contribute to university life and represent student interests.

His dedication was further recognised through more than five awards and over ten certificates acknowledging his contributions to leadership, service and academic excellence.

However, one of the most significant moments of his university experience came with his selection as Valedictorian.

The distinction placed him among a select group of students recognised for exceptional achievement at UWI, marking another milestone in a journey that began in a small Essequibo community.

More Than Academic Success

While Naresh’s examination results and awards tell an impressive story, his accomplishments extend beyond academic performance.

His involvement in student leadership reflects a broader commitment to personal development, responsibility and service.

From representing his school as Valedictorian to assuming leadership responsibilities at university, he has demonstrated that academic achievement and meaningful participation in student life can go hand in hand.

At just 21, he has accumulated a record of accomplishments that spans primary, secondary and tertiary education, earning recognition at both the national and regional levels.

A Small Island, An Extraordinary Journey

There is something particularly inspiring about the distance Naresh has travelled, not merely in geographical terms, but in the opportunities he has embraced and the milestones he has achieved.

From the classrooms of Sans Souci Primary School to the academic halls of the University of the West Indies, his journey has been defined by a remarkable consistency of purpose.

His achievements also bring attention to the talent emerging from Guyana’s smaller communities, where young people continue to demonstrate their ability to compete and excel alongside their regional counterparts.

For Wakenaam, his story is a source of pride. For Essequibo, it is another example of the potential within its communities. And for Guyana, it is a reminder of the extraordinary promise of its young people.

Naresh Jagnanan’s story is far more than a collection of certificates, awards and academic distinctions.

It is a powerful reminder that humble beginnings do not place limits on extraordinary ambitions.

At 21, he has already accomplished what many students aspire to achieve throughout their academic careers.

Yet, perhaps the most exciting part of his story is not simply how far he has come, but how much more he may accomplish.

From Belle Plaine to regional academic recognition, Naresh Jagnanan continues to demonstrate that excellence knows no geographical boundaries.

And for this young son of Wakenaam, the journey of achievement may only be beginning.
